Letting go

The concept

I've always considered that I was quite good at 'letting go' - at least of the things I could see.

I have frequently let go of homes, places, people, possessions and occupations - moving somewhere new and 'reinventing' myself. But, it's a subjective term and there are many unseen 'things' lurking within us that we aren't aware of. Things we could well do with letting go of.

In conversation with a friend, we mulled over the 'letting go' process and what it might look like for each of us in the near future. I continued the mulling process long after the conversation - in fact I rarely stop mulling, I rather like the idea of becoming freer (from what, I wonder?).

I already live in a tiny house, having downsized rather dramatically and given away or sold most things I possessed at the time. So, what's left?

For me, I think it's partly all the conditioning we acquire from childhood upwards as we grow into a world that requires a certain amount of conformity from us. But that's another story.

Meanwhile...

So, whilst mulling, I created an art doll. A physical representation of 'letting go'. I tried to let go of any creative order I might possess - allowing the figure to create herself (in truth, I think this is how I always work, this was just messier).

This was the result. I rather like the glitzy, theatrical way she turned out. A quick evening photoshoot on the farm gate before whizzing off to a new home.

The same shot, but landscape. It gives more weight to the 'letting go' theme if she isn't too constrained by the boundary the photo imposes. Maybe she needs to tilt her head upwards - in a receptive gesture to the world/universe/spirit? But, I think she looks pretty happy about it anyway.
